WHY KERRY LOST
The following commentary was written for Z-Net:
John Kerry has definitively lost the popular vote by some three and a half million votes. That makes an all-out lawyers’ war in Ohio devoid of moral force (and I doubt that in the end there’ll be one).
Kerry ran a tactical campaign, devoid of vision or explicable alternatives, utterly lacking in message discipline, and riddled with misjudgments--it was one of the most incompetently run presidential campaigns by a Democrat in my lifetime. In addition, the voters just didn't like the rich stiff--and, as I've often observed, Americans don't want a president thay can't like. (In the exit polls, 76% said the one candidate quality which mattered most in how they voted for president was "he cares about people like me," which is the way pollsters determine likeability).
Kerry’s biggest blunder was his failure to focus like a laser on the economy in the final weeks of the campaign, despite polls showing it was the number one issue on voters' minds. The lethal character of Kerry’s scatter-shot, flailing, themeless campaign close can be clearly seen in the Ohio exit polls. In the Buckeye State, 62% of the voters said the economy was “not good”--BUT asked who they’d trust with the economy, they were evenly split between Bush and Kerry, 48-48%. The national number on that question actually favored Bush, who got 48% on the economy to Kerry's 46%.
By not focusing on the economy, even in a state that had lost 250,000 jobs on Bush’s watch Kerry couldn’t make the case that he’d do better. Whatever economic message (feeble though it may have been) which his campaign had was blown out of the water by Kerry’s final-week harangues on the Iraqi
explosives issue (about which there was too much reportorial dispute in the media to provide him a clean shot at Bush).
The Rove-Bush Republicans ran a brilliant, disciplined, and utterly base campaign that used three principal issues to defeat the Democrats: Iraq, Israel, and gays.
History will record that John Kerry lost the election on the day he voted the Constitution-shredding blank check for Bush’s war on Iraq. He was hobbled throughout the campaign by this vote, which shackled him to a me-too posture that included endlessly repeated pledges to “stay the course” in Iraq and “win” the occupation. Kerry could not, therefore, develop and present a full-blown critique of Bush on Iraq, nor offer a genuine alternative to him on it. The non-existent Kerry “plan” (based on the hubris
that he could con foreign allies into sending their troops to bleed and die for the U.S. crimes at Abu Ghraib) wasn’t bought by the voters. Bush won by making the link between Iraq and the war on terrorism--the Big Lie which Kerry could not effectively counter, because he’d bought into it at the
beginning. And it was on that endlessly hammered lie that Bush won the country on the Iraq issue--the exit polls Tuesday night showed that voters thought the Iraq war was part of the war on terror by 52-44%.
There was a missed moment (one of many) in the campaign, right after the devastating Senate report on the U.S. intelligence failure leading up to the war, when Kerry could have done what his Senate colleague (and Intelligence Committee ranking Democrat) Jay Rockefeller did then--say, “If I’d known
then what I know now, I’d never had voted for the war.” But the cautious and spineless Kerry didn’t have the intestinal fortitude or the inner conviction necessary to break with his vote for war. It would probably have worked--Americans like someone who can admit a mistake. But Kerry listened to his overpriced, condohead campaign consultants, and instead hid behind his medals.
The Rove-Bush decision to French-kiss Ariel Sharon was entirely an electoral one, directly aimed at Florida. It worked. Bush thus was able to peel off enough of the Jewish vote to reduce the Democratic majorities in Dade County, Palm Beach and other enclaves necessary to overcome Bush, with his
lock on the Hispanics and evangelicals. The president won Florida, and quite comfortably.
Finally, there was the decision to surf on the anti-gay backlash that first surfaced in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the so-called sodomy laws, and intensify it as soon as the Massachusetts Supreme Court decided (as it was clear it would) that denying marriage equality to
gay people was a violation of fundamental civil rights. The tools to scapegoat gays were the Federal Marriage Amendment, and the 11 anti-gay state referenda.
This is, after all, a country drowning in censorious, politicized religiosity. The exit polls showed 21 percent of voters said that “moral values” --more than either Iraq or the economy-- was what determined their vote. Nowhere did this strategy work better than in Ohio, where the southern tier is the cultural equivalent of a Deep South state, drowning in religiously-inculcated homo-hate; and where traditionally Democratic working class Catholic voters --whom Kerry failed to bind to him with an economic program that could arouse their passions--were peeled off in sufficient
numbers to reduce Kerry’s margins in the larger cities. And the sweeping anti-gay referendum in Ohio --which outlaws civil unions or any more minor legal recognition of same-sex couples, as well as gay marriage-- passed by 2-1. As it did in all the other ten states with referenda, with the smallest margin of victory for the anti-gay measure in Oregon (where it won by a resounding 14 points.)
Undoubtedly, the Corporate Democrats and their liberal power-junkie helpmates will decide that they lost the election because they didn’t squirm far enough to the right. Where is the institutional leadership--or the leader--who could fight for a reorientation of the party toward a populist, progressive, passionate commitment to social and economic justice as a REAL alternative to reactionary Republicanism? Oh, Hillary Clinton, you say? Don’t make me laugh. But she’ll undoubtedly be the Democrats’ nominee in
2008--which is why we can expect, not four more years of Republican rule, but 12.

Democratic Campaign Slogan: Vote for me, you stupid, religious bigots!
Posted by: Fritz | Dec 7, 2004 1:36:10 PM
The reason Kerry lost is simple:
77% of Whites voted for Bush
88% of African Americans Voted Kerry
53% of Latinos Voted Kerry
56% of Asians Voted Kerry
55% of people with PostGrad education voted for Kerry
58% of the population does not have any college education (and the majority of these people voted for Bush)
11% of the voters had never voted before and of those who never voted 53% of them voted Kerry
78% of people who label themselves "highly religious or born again" voted for Bush
62% of people who never attend church voted for Kerry
77% of gays, lesbians and bisexuals voted for Kerry
63% of gun owners voted for Bush
48% of the population is satisfied with how Bush is doing, and yet 10% of those people still did not vote for him
42% of the population thinks abortion should be illegal, and 79% of those people voted for Bush
BOTTOM LINE: The more informed votes (educated) would have made Kerry president and the religous / gun owners of the world did not vote with a broad perspective. However, the more informed votes equal the same as every other Joe Smith (not that it should be any other way).

I feel the reasons that the Democrats lost the election is that we are trying to be Republicans. We need to grow strong in our convictions and be unafraid to express them. Shadowing the right by standing in the middle is not working. We need to boldly say; Yes! I am for gay rights! Yes! I am opposed to fully automated assault weapons! Yes! I am pro choice! Yes! I am opposed to the word god in the pledge of allegiance! Yes! church must be kept separate from the affairs of the State! This country began with people fleeing persecution. They (republicans) do not have the cornerstone on morals. We must challenge the illusion of morals by asking;
Is not feeding the poor a moral issue? Is not protecting the environment shared by all a moral issue? Is not healing the ill and providing care for the old a moral issue? Is not invasion a War Crime and a moral issue? Is not providing equal opportunities for the poor, racially diverse, homosexuals and all peoples moral? Is not providing shelter to those out in the cold a moral issue? And on and on.
Baby Boomers we are good at being vocal and making the issues heard and it is time to shift the morals and boldly go where we came from. We are not loose Republicans. We are Liberals and proud of it! We allowed Liberal to become a bad word and image. Stand back up old timers, get out our protest shoes and get to work on shifting the bullshit on morals. Support our politicians in stating "I am What I am and we are who we are!"
Encourage our politicians in standing up for what they REALLY feel is moralistic. What have we got to lose but the left hand completely. Be Real

So far as Doug's thesis about the failure for the Kerry campaign to address/get its message out about the economy, here is some confirmation from pollster Stan Greenberg:
A pollster for Mr. Kerry, Stanley Greenberg, said that the campaign saw evidence that its position was slightly deteriorating among white rural voters 10 days before Election Day and that the erosion began "cascading from group to group."
At a breakfast meeting with reporters, Mr. Greenberg said voters had been open to backing Mr. Kerry but pulled back after he failed to convince them to make their decision based on economic issues.
``Voters were very concerned about the economy'', Mr. Greenberg said, "but in the end, they did not respond to John Kerry on the economy. And after that, they voted their values. And that produced a cultural polarization of the electorate.
"These voters were waiting to hear an economic choice before the election, and they didn't get it."
This is from an article by Adam Nagourney from today (Tues 9-Nov) in the Election 2004 section
on the Times web site.

In addition to the gay and partial birth abortion issues, your man lost me because of his proposals of a fifty cents additional gas tax, a minimum wage hike, repealing the tax cuts and shutting down the development of bunker busting nukes. Bush also gets thumbs up for no U.S. terror attacks since nine eleven.

why Kerry lost?? Maybe...because his wife Teresa came off as a big mouth and not very "presidential"...or what's even sadder, Bush kissed the Bible Belt State's butts with his stand on gay marriages..oh well doesn't matter we're stuck with Bush for another 4 years...and you can bet the idiots in those same states that carried Bush will carry his brother, Jeb in 2008..just think...4 years of Daddy Bush..8 years of Son GW..and 8 years of Jeb..20 years of Bush..wonder what the deficit will be when the 20 years is over?? $30 trillion??? and why not? Bush and Cheney say deficite don't matter oh yeah right.

In fact, Kerry probably won both the popular and electoral vote, as Gore did in 2000. But Democrats have to more than win; they have to win by sufficient margins to overwhelm vote fraud:
http://www.tompaine.com/print/kerry_won.php
Given that we now have digital remote control vote fraud, you might want to help these guys:
http://www.blackboxvoting.org/
"Black Box Voting has taken the position that fraud took place in the 2004 election through electronic voting machines. We base this on hard evidence, documents obtained in public records requests, inside information, and other data indicative of manipulation of electronic voting systems. What we do not know is the specific scope of the fraud. We are working now to compile the proof, based not on soft evidence -- red flags, exit polls -- but core documents obtained by Black Box Voting in the most massive Freedom of Information action in history."

"It's also those who have the least in common with both Bush and Kerry regarding class interests." Actually, surveys indicate that most people DID vote their class interests. Kerry won among those making less than $50,000 a year. Bush won among those making more. Of course, I would argue that the only class that will really benefit (at least temporarily) from Bush's program is the wealthier class of millionaires who own productive capital.

A GWU panel held a discussion on C-Span today in which some of the professors cautioned against reading too much into this polling mentioning "values." They said that many of those who mentioned values as a decisive factor actually voted for Kerry. I would agree with the comment above. The democrats have failed to deliver their message to the under-educated blue-collar white worker.

To return to Direland's point that Kerry should have focused like a laser on the economy...I disagree; I believe he tried in early and mid-September, and my perception then was that the media wouldn't cover his focus. The media wanted to talk about WAR, and when Kerry shifted to Iraq, coverage of what he was saying went up many hundreds of per cent...it seems the mainstream media has gotten so pathetic that if you don't talk about what they want to talk about, you won't get anything except the most perfunctory coverage...

In response to Fritz and Sam L, I never suggested that Republicans were evil. Most Germans in the thirties weren't evil - they had become ridiculously tribal and consequently inhumane (as the Iraq War is inhumane to all who participate in it). Not all Republicans are simpletons - I did mention the idealogical right-wingers who can sometimes be reasonably intelligent. And yes, there are dumb left-wingers too if you have to squeeze it out of me. But you have to admit, most creative people such as comedians, musicians, writers and scientists tend to be on the left. Rush Limbaugh was about the only conservative who was actually clever enough to be funny - and given all his purported drug use he may actually be a closet lefty. Furthermore, don't confuse "hate" with frustration. I'm an American but currrently live in Manitoba, Canada - perhaps the most socialist jurisdiction in North America. Consequently, my family reaps the benefits - free health care, a clean environment, low crime rate, a solid diversified economy, low cost-of-living, and a pleasant work environment due to diligent labour laws. Due to global issues, everyone in North America is better off when the U.S. is economically, environmentally and socially healthy. Usually, I feel sorry for jurisdictions that squander opportunities away by leaning towards near-sighted conservatism - on US election night, it was down-right aggravating.

Bush had 5.4 unemployment, lower than Clinton in 96.
It was THAT low because of the tax cuts, especially the money that went into the hands of the greedy, rich capitalists who wanted to EXPAND -- and hire more workers.

I guess John Kerry went into the primary without a plan to win the election. The Democrats threw everything they had at this election. They ran a phony Vietnam War hero and a phony Southerner. They had middle-aged women executives at MTV hawking "Rock the Vote" to entice the most uninformed young people to vote for Kerry. They had Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews and New York Times darling Eminem. They had documentaries, books, the universities, Hollywood (and the French!) on their side.
They had liberal thugs ransacking Bush-Cheney headquarters, stealing Bush-Cheney signs and slashing the tires of Bush-Cheney get-out-the-vote vans on Election Day. In Colorado, they traded voter registrations for crack cocaine. In Ohio, they registered Mary Poppins and Dick Tracy. In South Carolina, Emily's List called Republican households and gave them incorrect information about the location of polling places.
The media campaigned heavily for Kerry with endless Abu Ghraib coverage, phony National Guard documents and, days before the election, false news reports that hundreds of tons of munitions had been looted in Iraq.
The Democrats' cheating never stopped. The big story of this election is the fraudulent exit polling on Election Day. Strange as it seems to me, it is well acknowledged that people are more likely to come out and vote for a winner. Early exit polls showing Kerry the clear winner could be expected to depress the vote for Bush.
Stunningly inaccurate exit polls released around noon on Election Day convinced news anchors, talking heads and even the campaigns that Kerry would win walking away. But at 9 p.m., when the first actual results began to come in, the election flipped to Bush . It was the first Kerry flip-flop that actually served the national interest.
The exit polls were absurd: They showed Kerry winning Pennsylvania by 20 points and Bush tied with Kerry in Mississippi. Only monkey business can explain the wildly pro-Kerry exit polls--admittedly hard to believe with a party that has behaved so honorably throughout this campaign. Michael Barone speculates that the sites of exit polling were leaked to the Democrats, and Democrats sent large numbers of voters to those polls to take exit polls and throw the results.
But for all their chicanery, vote-stealing, Hollywood starlets, fake polls and faux patriotism, the Democrats were wiped out on Election Day.
Bush won the largest popular vote in history with a 3.5 million margin. Indeed, simply by getting a majority of the country to vote for him--the left's most hated politician since Richard Nixon--Bush did something "rock star" Bill Clinton never did. Bush maintained or increased his vote in every state but Vermont. Republicans picked up seats in the House and Senate, and continue to dominate state governorships. Also making history of a sort, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle lost his election, marking the first time in half a century a Senate leader has been defeated.
To Michael Moore, George Soros, Terry McAuliffe, Dan Rather, Al Franken and the whole gang at Air America Radio--you were great, guys! Thanks for the help! We couldn't have done it without you!
Of course, we could have done it a lot earlier on election night but for "Boy Genius" Karl Rove. It's absurd that the election was as close as it was. The nation is at war, Bush is a magnificent wartime leader, and the night before the election we didn't know if a liberal tax-and-spend, Vietnam War-protesting senator from Massachusetts would beat him. If Rove is "the architect"--as Bush called him in his acceptance speech--then he is the architect of high TV ratings, not a Republican victory. By keeping the race so tight, Rove ensured that a race that should have been a runaway Bush victory would not be over until the wee hours of the morning.
As we now know, the most important issue to voters was not terrorism, but moral values. Marriage amendments won by lopsided majorities in all 11 states where they were on the ballot. Even in Oregon, the state targeted by gay marriage advocates as their best shot of defeating a marriage amendment, the amendment passed with 57%--a figure noticeable for being larger than the percentage of votes cast for Bush in Oregon. In the great state of Mississippi, the marriage amendment passed with 86% of the vote.
Seventy to 80% of Americans oppose gay marriage and partial-birth abortion. Far from appealing exclusively to a narrow Republican base, opposition to gay marriage is strongest among the Democratic base: blacks, Hispanics, blue-collar workers and the elderly. There were marriage amendments on the ballot in Michigan and Ohio. Bush won Ohio narrowly and lost Michigan by only 2 points. How different might that have been if Bush hadn't run from the issue.
But Rove concluded Bush should stay mum on gay marriage and partial-birth abortion--contravening the politicians' rule of thumb: Talk about your positions that are wildly popular with voters. "Boy Genius" Rove decided Bush shouldn't even run radio ads on gay marriage, and, at the last minute, Bush started claiming he was in favor of civil unions, just like John Kerry.
Amazingly, it was the Democrats--the ones who support gay marriage--who used the gay issue for political advantage, most famously when Kerry gay-baited Mary Cheney during the third debate.
The one toss-up Senate seat lost by the Republicans was Pete Coors in Colorado, where the Democrats did not hesitate to run commercials of a bacchanalian gay festival in Canada sponsored by Coors Brewing Co. The most narrow Republican win in a toss-up Senate race was in Alaska, where the Republican candidate was another "progressive" on the social issues.
When contemplating a former New York mayor as their next presidential candidate, Republicans should remember: This election should have been over sometime in August, not 1 a.m. election night.

It is interesting to me that the conventions are now a big show versus some time ago when they spent days debating a party platform. That's when the issues really did matter just as much as the candidate. I don't think today's voters really do have a firm grasp of the positions of each of the parties.
On the Kerry front, I recall Clinton laying out a very concise economic plan that was endorsed by numerous economists and CEOs. Regardless of the efficacy of that plan, he had one when Geo H Bush seemingly did not. Clinton hit him hard on his vision and plan for the economy and health care, and people gravitated to that and his charisma.
All I heard Kerry say regarding the war in Iraq was that he was going to have a summit. Please. If he had articulated an actual economic plan endorsed by several economists and CEOs and done the same with the Iraq war with endorsements from prominent generals, then he would have stood a much better chance.
As far as the generalization of Bush supporters by Joseph Polimeni, of the 50MM(+) that voted for Bush, he would be shocked at the % that are his intellectual superior. His generalizations sound more like how the Nazis characterized the Jews. Very dangerous dialogue indeed and the kind of polarizing talk that the dems have been suffering through for the past several years. The dirtiest word you hear from Republicans is "Liberal".

I love what Joseph Polimeni has to say. Essentially, if you don't agree with him you must be evil or stupid. Perhaps both. That's why the Democrats lost: they hate and despise the people of this country and they won't make any attempt to understand what they want, what the believe in, and what their lives mean. This is the third national election in a row where the Democrats have lost big time, maybe it's not the people, maybe it's the party.

Carl, Living in Northern KY and working for Kerry in Ohio, I echo and underline the abortion issue. If yesterday was not surreal enough, talking with previously fiery Bushites today I heard a litany of neo-con-buyer's remorse with the tag line of, "if it wasn't for the abortion thing I might have gone for Kerry." Then, they went on to list all the things they "really" didn't like about Bush! All I could say in return was, "Do you ever plan on holding the Republican Party accountable for never delivering our YOUR issues while you continue to give them every cent you have and I have ever or will ever earn?"
Since we have probably lost the Supreme Court protection for Roe v Wade, has anyone ever considered forcing the Republican's hand on the abortion issue? Why can't we make them tie it up in committees and then yell like hell? Why don't we at least communicate WHY the Democrats are "for" Late Term Abortions? Every person I talked with agreed with the "except in the case of the mother's life exception," but they had NO idea that this was the Democratic position.
As long as the Republicans are the ostensible champions of Right to Life and the Liberals are percieved to be the intellectual elitists who control activist judges who like to kill babies, a moderate, progressive or left wing anybody is not going to stand a chance of connecting on other issues with mid-America. The Republican neo-cons and rich who will soon be getting even more tax cuts and huge contracts must be laughing like hell at "their base" who can be consistently counted on to send church buses to the polls to defeat the "evil liberals" without ever getting a darn thing in return.
Why not a a full, honest, open legislative process debate on a consitutional ammendment to ban abortion? I say it's time we help the social conservatives hold the Republicans accountable.

Kerry lost because the American rural culture is lapsing into a psychosis reminiscent of Germany in the thirties. Bush supporters are a motley amalgamation of bigots, religious zealots, simpletons, ideological right-wingers, and don’t forget those narcissistic, war mongering, pick-up truck driving, gun-toting middle-aged males. They particularly seem to identify with that chicken-hawk sissy in the White House - mostly because underneath that peacock appearance, these guys are losers and are deeply envious of JF Kennedy – type people. A lot these guys spend their entire lives take a shit-kicking from their low-wage jobs and dissatisfied families. When challenged, these guys invariably back down from street fights, but they’ll practice shooting at the local gun club and spout their anti-intellectual tough-talking crap. Certainly, Kerry’s not perfect and there are many layers of reasons why Kerry lost - but when so many people completely defy logic, how can a sane person move them?

On "Why Kerry Lost":
Yup. But what you, and virtually all other, otherwise lucid, progressive commentators fail to mention is the central role in this election played by the absolutely spectacular ignorance of the American electorate, on display throughout this campaign season as never before. War equals peace. Iraq equals 9/11. Elite agenda equals prosperity. Restriction of dissent equals freedom. Hegemony equals World leadership.
If you were to re-invent Kerry in the image that you suggest he should have presented, he would have been just as unacceptable to the broadest range of the public as is Ralph Nader or David Cobb. This pathetic culture deserves George Bush.

The Democrats could have run Jesus Christ and he would not have won any of the Bush states. The Republicans have defined the debate and turned stereotyping Democrats into reality. Why is our dog in the Right fight?
What's a pretty girl to do? I think the pretty girl, i.e. Democrats, need to re-evaluate this whole "run to the right thing" because it's not working. Yes, Clinton did it in '92 but times were different then; the fundamentalists had not completed their take-over of the Republican Party. We need a populist to raise the Democratic Flag, lead, get the young vote to vote and define our party's strategy. Let us lead the nature of the political debate, not follow.
Karl Rove got his extra 3-4 million voters in those states with gay marriage on the ballot. The effect was to mute any moral force about the poplar vote in case things got nasty in Ohio and Florida. Once again we, gays, are the disposable targets to unite the bullies on the playground.
When we find ourselves waking down the sidewalk of life, with a struggle in our path, just remember it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but rather, why are we fighting with the dog in the first place?
As Democrats we don't want to be more republican than the republicans are. Let's not play that game. Lead, not follow.

Re: "The powered elites of the left/dems aren't actually interested in being inclusive of others (non-elites/working people/non-rich, etc) all the while priding themselves about their idea of it."
The powered elites of the Democrats ARE NOT ON THE LEFT. Kerry and his ilk are NOT THE LEFT. They are the (corporate-funded) center. This race was between the center and the right, but unfortunately it will be seen as a defeat for the left. And given that it has proven that there is a sector of the American working class that resolutely doesn't give a damn about its own class interests (not in not voting for Kerry, but in voting FOR Bush), it IS a defeat for the left. Somehow or other, we have to win these people over, but I have no idea how.
