BUSH CAVES IN TO ISLAMIST CONSTITUTION FOR IRAQ -- AND THE U.S. PRESS BLOWS THE STORY
If the Bush administration brokered a deal in Occupied Iraq to enshrine Islamic law as the guiding principle of the new Iraqi Constitution, you'd think it would be headline news in the U.S. media, wouldn't you? Well, that's what has happened -- yet you can
search the Sunday papers in vain to find this sell-out to the Islamists clearly portrayed -- or, in some cases, even mentioned.
In a dispatch that Reuters moved at 1:33 P.M. on Saturday (August 20), the headline reads, "U.S. concedes ground to Islamists on Iraqi law." "U.S. diplomats have conceded ground to Islamists on the role of religion in Iraq, negotiators said on Saturday as they raced to meet a 48-hour deadline to draft a constitution under intense U.S. pressure," Reuters reported. "Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish negotiators all said there was accord on a bigger role for Islamic law than Iraq had before.
"But a secular Kurdish politician said Kurds opposed making Islam 'the,' not 'a,'main source of law -- changing current wording -- and subjecting all legislation to a religious test. 'We understand the Americans have sided with the Shi'ites," he said. "It's shocking. It doesn't fit American values. They have spent so much blood and money here, only to back the creation of an Islamist state ... I can't believe that's what the Americans really want or what the American people want.'"
Under the soporific headline, "Iraqi Talks Move Ahead on Some Issues," The Sunday New York Times did report, under an August 20 Baghdad deadline, that
"Under a deal brokered Friday by the American ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad (right), Islam was to be named "a primary source of legislation" in the new Iraqi constitution, with the proviso that no legislation be permitted that conflicted with the 'universal principles' of the religion. The latter phrase raised concerns that Iraqi judges would have wide latitude to strike down laws now on the books, as well as future legislation. At the same time, according to a Kurdish leader involved in the talks, Mr. Khalilzad had backed language that would have given clerics sole authority in settling marriage and family disputes. That gave rise to concerns that women's rights, as they are enunciated in Iraq's existing laws, could be curtailed. Finally, according to the person close to the negotiations, Mr. Khalilzad had been backing an arrangement that could have allowed clerics to have a hand in interpreting the constitution." But because of the way the Times presented the story, it's doubtful that anyone bothered to pay attention to it or wade into the body of the story to find this revealing detail.
The Washington Post also put a snooze of a headline on its Sunday story: "Kurds Fault U.S. on Iraqi Charter," said the Post header -- but it's not until the story's fifth paragraph that one gets to the meat, when the paper reports that, "The working draft of the constitution stipulates that no law can contradict Islamic principles. In talks with Shiite religious parties, Kurdish negotiators said they have pressed unsuccessfully to limit the definition of Islamic law to principles agreed upon by all groups. The Kurds said current language in the draft would subject Iraqis to extreme interpretations of Islamic law. Kurds also contend that provisions in the draft would allow Islamic clerics to serve on the high court, which would interpret the constitution. That would potentially subject marriage, divorce, inheritance and other civil matters to religious law and could harm women's rights, according to the Kurdish negotiators and some women's groups."
Moreover, the Post devalued the impact of this information by relying solely on Kurdish sources. But the Reuters dispatch also cited one of the main Sunni negotiators on the Constitution confirming the U.S. sell-out to the Islamists: "Sunni Arab negotiator Saleh al-Mutlak also said a deal was struck which would mean parliament could pass no legislation that 'contradicted Islamic principles. A constitutional court would rule on any dispute on that, [a] Shi'ite official [of one of the main parties in the governing coalition] said," Reuters reported, further quoting the Sunni's Mutlak as saying "The Americans agreed...."
Given the way the two national U.S. dailies -- which set the TV news agenda -- played this story, it's hardly surprising that shallow little George Stephanopoulos (right), on
this morning's ABC political chat show "This Week," didn't even bother to raise the question of the U.S. cave-in to an Islamic Constitution, neither when quizzing several U.S. Senators (Republicans Allen and Hagel) and Gov. Bill Richardson on Iraq, nor in the round-table discussion with journalists which followed. And on NBC's "Meet the Press" this morning, David Gregory (subbing for Tim Russert) also failed to bring up the U.S. sell-out to an Islamist Constitution in long discussions of Iraq with Sens. Russ Feingold and Trent Lott (Feingold should have mentioned it--but didn't), although Gregory did bring it up in a roundtable at the very end of the show (by which time a lot of people had probably switched to watching "Sports Wives" -- why didn't Gregory talk about this important news at the top of the hour, particularly when questioning Lott, who kept insisting "we're making progress" in Iraq?)
The Reuters dispatch also contained this useful and highly relevant reminder, absent from both the Times and Post reports: that Bush's ambassador to Iraq, Khalilzad, "helped draft a constitution in his native Afghanistan that declared it an 'Islamic Republic' in which no law could contradict Islam." And the Post story, way down, quoted the Sunni's Mutlak as saying of Khalilzad, "'His main interest is to push the constitution on time, no matter what the constitution has in it,'' said Salih Mutlak, a Sunni delegate who has been outspoken against some compromise proposals. 'No country in the world can draft their constitution in three months. They themselves took 10 years,' Mutlak said, referring to the United States. 'Why do they wish to impose a silly constitution on us?'" Meanwhile, the AP reports this morning that the Sunnis say they've been left out of the negotiations over the Constitution.-- a sure prescription for more violence in Iraq.
Why is the Bush administration strong-arming the Iraqis into rushing through a new Constitution with so little time to craft it? Two reasons: Bush desperately wants to score a p.r. victory in "the war on terror," in which his administration continues to insist that Iraq is the main front (even though it is the U.S. occupation of Iraq that is now the main motivator for terrorist-style violence); and because failure to achieve a new Constitution on time would undoubtedly cause new elections in Iraq -- and the Bushies are terribly afraid of the Iraqi voters, fearing that discontent in the country with the U.S. occupation and its failure to bring either security from violence or to deliver basics -- like water and electric power-- would lead to the election of a government less maleable by Washington, thus creating further U.S. domestic backlash against the Anglo-American occupation of Iraq. That short-sighted desire for achieving something that could be sold by Bush's spinmeisters to the American people as 'progress" in Iraq is what's driven Bush's man to break arms on behalf of an Islamist Constitution for Iraq.
The Reuters report cited above is reinforced by the coverage in the daily Al-Hayat, cited by Middle East expert Prof. Juan Cole this morning on his excellent blog, Informed Content.
Cole (left) writes: "In one of the major disputes outstanding between the Kurds and the Shiites, on whether Islamic law will be the fundamental source or only one of the sources of Iraqi law, the Shiite religious parties appear to have won out. AFP reports that the reason for this is that the United States has swung around and begun to support the primacy of Islamic canon law.
"Al-Hayat writes, 'Also, an agreement was reached that Islam is the religion of state, and that no law shall be enacted that contradicts the agreed-upon essential verities of Islam. Likewise, the inviolability of the highest [Shiite] religious authorities in the land is safeguarded, without any allusion to a detailed description. The paragraph governing these matters will specify that Islam is 'the fundamental basis' for legislation, though there will be an allusion to the protection of democratic values, human rights, and social and national values. A Higher Council will be formed to review new legislation to ensure it does not contravene the essential verities of the Islamic religion.' Personal status law, concerning marriage, divorce, alimony, inheritance, and so forth, will be adjudicated by religious courts in accordance with the religion or sect to which the individual belongs."
And, of course, nobody mentioned it in all these cited reports, but gays and lesbians in particular also have huge reason to be afraid of an Islamic Constitution in Iraq. But Prof. Cole also extensively quotes the text of the Islamic Constitution which U.S. Ambassador Khalilzad godfathered in Afghanistan. It makes for chilling reading, especially as an omen of what Khalilzad is cooking up in Iraq, and you can read it by clicking here.
In a related development, "The Army is planning for the possibility of keeping the current number of soldiers in Iraq — well over 100,000 — for four more years, the Army’s top general," Gen. Peter Schoomaker (left), said on Saturday in an interview with AP.

Until the United States' terrorists and assassins are stopped in their
tracks, the world cannot rest. Human beings are presently tortured,
imprisoned and murdered by the fbi and the cia worldwide for no cause;
this will not stop until the global population demands the surrender of
the homicidal sociopaths who dominate U.S. political and economic
policies. The concept that if the U.S. is let alone (or with its
puppet allies) to be armed with nuclear weaponry in order to allow the
rest of the world to live in peace is total lunacy. The United States
used the nuclear bomb, threatens to use it again, and will in fact use
it again to attack any nation which remotely threatens the U.S.
stranglehold on the world.
Under the best of scenarios (as viewed from the perspective of non
conforming-belligerent nations), however, the world cannot defeat the
U.S. war machine. Any attempt to prepare to do so will be met with
total destruction of the aggressor. Even today the U.S. has another
weapon (other than conventional) which can theoretically wipe out,
instantaneously, any cache or bank of unfriendly technologies which may
pose a threat to the U.S. or its allies: the laser beam fixed in
positon in outer space can accomplish this little task just fine (see
world in a box at www.sosbeevfbi.com).
The real issue , I think, is how
to stop all weaponry on earth from being used and at the same time to
afford all human beings alive some hope for peace and stability
everywhere and for all time. The formation of a one world , one people
Humane global government must be studied and proposed. The tyrants of
any given country cannot be entrusted with Human Rights and Individual
Freedom issues ever again. This means that the people of the world, not
their respective governments, must embark on mankind's most ambitious
odyssey: the journey toward permanent peace and harmony on earth and
the uncompromising realization of Human Rights for all. This can be
done; such a goal is not simply a dream. What appears as an
unattainable dream is that the United States or any other government
on earth will someday stop killing and torturing people and allow them
to live in peace , mutual respect and love.

Islamic Supremacy. This is freakin insane! Facts: Osama Bin Laden recruits and maintains his power base by calling for an islamic state and law. Whatever you may think of or how you characterize his means, this is and has been his stated goal. Bush and his peeps, who have sought to justify this war on everchanging grounds starting with WMD apparitions, recently settled on catch-phrasing "democracy" and "freedom" as a stated purpose for sacrificing American lives and status. No media member ever critically explored exactly what the administration actually meant by the type of "democracy" to be established or the panapoly of "freedoms" being preserved. Playing fast and loose with generalities and phraseology, without substantive references, is the same hipocracy which is being used to negate and nullify our hard foughten liberties at home.
How many of the grunts in Iraq, risking their lives every minute of every day, would volunteer or stay if they had the say on whether the wished to fight for Islam? Or, our would our female soldiers continue their service if they were fighting for second class citizenship for Iraqi women under traditional Islamic law? I'd like to hear which officers and generals support giving away Amercan lives for the establishment of religion (any religion). If everyone is beholden to the supremacy of the constitution, doesn't it or should it not impliedly and logically prevent and prohibit the U.S. from using our citizen's lives to establish any religous state? And don't give us the spin the this is the "Iraqi's" choice since it is American lives and money holding up the entire country. There are at least 20 or more replies to this specious claim/argument.
If the history of the world has or should have taught us anything, more death and destruction has been inflicted and justified in the name of religion (including christianity) than all other causes and justifications. Take any modern religious state (including Isreal) and decide for yourself whether the "religious" nature of the state has helped, impeded or fostered peace. And don't even start to hold out Afganistan. If you believe that, attempt a cross-country camping trip there or open up an anti-islam oriented newspaper or group. Make sure your Last Will is updated!
There is a huge difference between the true meaning of "freedom of religion" and the establishment of religion (here or abroad).
If you agree, with this analysis, email this and any additional analysis to your representatives (state & federal), local and national media, the political parties, the pentagon and everyone you can think of to disseminate this outrage and protect our American soldiers and ideals. If you disagree, post your position and submit a request to establish an New American Motto such as "Sacraficing for Islam since 2001".

What else do you expect from the Liberal Media? They are mouthpieces for the US government, thus they bury anything that doesn't smell pleasant.
The Liberal Media are also working hard to bury another story damaging to the Bushies. Pat Robertson used his TV show "The 700 Club" to call for the US government to assassinate Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. Media Matters for America broke the story yesterday; it's still the top story now at www.mediamatters.org.

I agree with DisIllusioned Kid. The United States is no longer a ruling force. Remember Iraq was granted its sovereignty, so the Iraqi government should do what they see fit. However, some worry that with Islamic Law being the basis a democracy (A western Democracy) will not bloom.
Also, Bush has been riding on this whole democracy bit as one of his reasons for going to war.
Yea, I bet the Bush Administration is worried about women's rights, that is why you never heard anything about FGM, in the so-called liberal media. There is this great web-site that tracks women's rights in Iraq.
One more thing, I was watching "The Situation Room" yesterday on CNN. And there was this "analyst" from the AEI (American Enterprise Institute). He (Gerecht) said something like if women have the right to vote, it will balance everything else out regarding women's rights. That may not seem bad, but the way he said it was truly callous. Yea. Here in America, women vote and they are still screwed over.

Would not the Sunni and Kurd give the middle finger to the central government by arguing that they will have more control over their own provinces? If they do not or are unsuccessful i would surmise there would be civil war. Not surprised about the "news" media not reporting whats really going on in Americas "sand box" they all scheme with Bush & Company.

It looks like wherever Bush and Company go they spread misery. Be it throwing out Jews from their homes in Gaza, to turning Iraq into a horror show, to busting Mark Emery in Canada for selling seeds. Meanwhile Kerry attends Hunter Thompson's memorial but if he had been elected he would have continued to treat drugs as a criminal problem.

Yes, this is shocking to some sane Americans who sincerely believe that the US is in Iraq to bring democracy to that country! For many of us outside the US, the reason for the "war against Iraq" is control of their oil.. Why should the diplomats care one way or the other what constitution the country has as long as the basic reason is fulfilled? Non-Americans see through these ruses much better particularly because people like me who never ever imagined that a US administration can do things like what has been going on since 2000, are so very cynical now. As a Christian, I feel betrayed by the version of Christianity Bush follows that even Jesus won't recognise!

I'm kinda with Lamann.
This is what their "fairly elected" representatives, under outside influence and time pressure, have decided amongst themselves.
We should be showing this as _proof_ this war isn't about Islam.
"See, we support Islamic Republics!"
Instead, since Bush's support comes from the evangelicals, this tack of a propaganda campaign is unlikely to emerge.

Regardless of the outcome and makeup of the Iraqi constitution, Iraq will for many years at least be nothing more than a vassal state for US corporate interests. And now that Iraq is seemingly headed in the direction of an Islamic fundamentlist state, it gives the war party that many more "Islamic terrorist" suspects to point a finger at after any terrorist attack. What we are seeing here, just as we have been seeing the past four years, is the feeding of the perpetual war on terror, or in real terms, US military aggressions to acquire the resources of oil-rich nations under the guise of fighting "terrorists".

Interesting report. I take the exact opposite opinion here though to the conclusion. This is not a negotiation between the US and the people of Iraq, this is a negotiation among representatives of the people of Iraq. The Iraqi people must agree to this, and without Islamic principles being the foundation of law this constitution will be still born.
Personal and marriage laws are to be determined by the religious courts. This includes Christians living by Christian law and Jews living by Jewish law. This demonstrates the extensive freedom of religion Islam prescribes, which far exceeds that in the West. This may become one of the few places where Catholics have to obey the pope!
