AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE ON THE THEOCRATIC RIGHT
Understanding Dominionism, Political Power and the Aims of the Theocratic Right is the titlle of an important conference to be held in New York City on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22, and is sponsored by the Open Center.
Few people outside the conservative states are aware of the phenomenon of Dominionism, an influential form of fundamentalist religion which believes that ‘godly Christians’ must take control of the levers of political and judicial power in America in the near future. If this is not achieved, they believe, then biblical prophecy cannot be fulfilled in the form of The Rapture, the End Times, Armageddon and ultimately the second coming of Christ. Popularized by the Left Behind series of books that are said to have sold over sixty million copies, this religious belief system has become increasingly influential. While there are many shades of opinion on the religious right, Dominionists and Reconstructionists believe that they are the new chosen people given a mission by God to return America to its true Christian faith.
This conference features a number of my favorite journalists and experts on the theocratic right: Chip Berlet (left) of Political Research Associates, one of the best informed observers of the religious far right in America; Esther Kaplan (right), author of With God on Their Side; Frederick Clarkson, (lower left), pioneering investigative journalist and author of Eternal Hostility: The Struggle between Theocracy and Democracy; and Chris Hedges (lower right) , former New York Times war correspondent and author of the Harper's magazine cover story, "Soldiers of Christ."
The October 21-22 conference costs $95, but you may attend just the Friday or just the Saturday sessions at a lesser cost. Reservations are needed -- to make one, telephone 212-219-2527 ext. 2.
Friday's program:The Beast and the New American Empire: Dominionist Readings of the Book of Revelation; Crafting a Coalition: The Political Right and Dominionism Saturday's Program: How Conservatives Became Theocrats, and This is What Theocracy Looks Like: Dominionism and Christian Reconstruction; The Christian Right and the GOP: And the Growing Influence of Christian Zionism on U.S. Policy Toward Israel; Dominionism and the End of Nature: The Dominionist Threat to the Environment; Apocalyptic Dualism and Conspiracist Scapegoating; Soldiers of Christ.

Christian Reconstructionists are POSTMILLENNIALISTS and they do not believe in an imminent "rapture." To characterize the Reconstructionist position as stated above just shows a shallow understanding of the theology behind the movement. Reconstructionists are essentially Neo-Puritans in the tradition of John Winthrop ("We shall be a city set upon a hill for all the world to see") and Jonathan Edwards ("The History of Redemption") who are looking for a golden age of Christianity -- not a quick escape or a return to the past. To those wanting a true definition of CR, I can only say: Do your homework! Read primary sources and don't rely on the propaganda of the hysterical left.

Somebody might have to ask Bushes new Supreme Court nominee whether he subscribes to this view.

Does anyone know if this will be recorded? Download an audio or video copy? It would be great if this thing were recorded.
