Updated: LATVIAN GAY PRIDE MEETING UNDER SIEGE IN RIGA TODAY BY FASCISTS, VIOLENCE USED
Today in the Latvian capital of Riga, a crowd of fascists laid siege to and attacked a meeting called by the Latvian gay organization Mozaika at the four-star Reval Hotel to celebrate Gay Pride, after the Pride March planned for today in Riga was banned on Wednesday this past week by the Riga City Council, a ban upheld on Friday by a Latvian court. But anti-gay fascist protesters laid siege to the hotel where some 100 gays and lesbians were meeting, and assaulted those trying to
leave. The gay meeting attracted many journalists, who have also been targeted for assault by the protesters, who pelted them with eggs, bottles, and water. [For background on today's siege, read my article for Gay City News earlier this week on the ban on the Latvian Pride March by clicking here,.]
Nicolas Alexeyev of GayRussia.ru -- who was the organizer of the banned Moscow Gay Pride March, during which he was arrested (Alexeyev at left in photo of his arrest), a demonstration that was also broken up by fascists on May 27 -- had gone to Riga in solidarity with Latvian gay activists to protest the ban on the Latvian Pride March, and Alexeyev this morning has been e-mailing a series of reports on the ongoing siege of the hotel and the assaults, which were continuing as of the receipt of his latest dispatch at 9:09 AM EST. "Protesters are targetting anyone going out of the hotel. Speeches continue inside the hotel quietly, as planned," wrote Alexeyev in his latest e-mail message.
"Today, Latvia does not show the face of a modern and democratic country. Instead, Riga is showing the face of homophobic facism, threatening its citizens and their guests, including members of the European Parliament," wrote Alexeyev.
rotten fruit. Despite previously requesting police protection, no police were present to protect the congregation. Dutch MEP (Member of the European Parliament) Sophie In’t Veld (photo right) was one of the worshippers prevented from leaving the church by the homophobic vigilantes," reported Alexeyev."Around a dozen of the gay pride supporters, including a pastor, Juris Calitis, who led the service and remained in the church after most of the congregation had slipped out, were hit by eggs and bags of excrement as they left," according to the AFP dispatch.

The online pharmacy no prescription phrase works on two distinct planes; the internet and non prescription medication. But, we are fusing the phrase so that it means something and we can use the constituent parts of the phrase to create an idea. The concept of “online pharmacy no prescription” is designed for the purpose of providing medication over the internet (online) for all those people all over the world who are in dire need of suitable medication at reasonable prices, which is exactly the reason behind generic meds.

Diflucan Flucanazole medication is an antifungal agent used to treat infections in certain areas of the body caused by yeast and yeast-like organisms. Generic Diflucan works best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals. Take as directed since different conditions require different methods of use. This drug is usually taken once daily. Another dosing method involves taking the drug for one week per month until treatment is completed. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow the yeast to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection. The situation in Latvia is unbelievably frustrating. I would like to take further action and would appreciate any ideas for a letter-writing campaign or something similar.
My boyfriend's ancestry is Latvia. We went to Riga in October of 2005 and can tell you that it is wonderfully romantic and the fact that these bullies and fascists are painting Latvia as intolerant is very sickening.
Feel free to email me for a serious response to this situation. Maybe we could reach out to the Latviana and police security forces, as well as some politicians?
We have to remember that even in Boston in early 90s (1992?), police had to escort a group of gay activists who wished to walk in our Saint Patty's Day parade and there were lots of insults, rocks and eggs hurled ... but at least they had police protection. Fascists won't be so willing to attack cops as they would gays. This is why I think it's more important to have the security in place first, especially in this fledgling democracy. Latvia only gained its independence from the USSR in 1991.

In my country, Sweden, the protets of nutjob Fred Phelps are frequently reported in our main dailies. Alas, the Latvia thuggery, taking place right next door, hasn't been mentioned. American homophobia is the only one that scores political points, I suppose.

I went to the Latvia Government Website, and I signed their foreign ministry's guestbook with a STRONG PROTEST against such treatment. I also said that I would advise ALL against visiting Latvia under any circumstances.

The only way to stop this horrific conduct is to shine a big bright light on it and broadcast it to the world. These fascist bullies are not representative of the entire country, but left unchecked, they will influence people.
Anyway, Latvia is a member of the European Union. If the police don't protect gays from thugs, aren't there avenues through the European Courts? I can't think that the Latvia government is very happy with this going on, no matter what their personal opinions.

Eastern Europe is going to take some time. As bad as it is, it's at least someplace closer to humane values than the Middle East. What we can do is keep reminding the fascists we are watching. Bullies love flexing their muscles when they think they're being admired. It's very important to remind Eastern Europeans that their bigotry marks them quite unadmirable.

Since I had been present in Riga on hehalf of HuK (Homosexuelle und Kirche, Homosexuals and Church, the largest Christian lesbigay organization in Germany), and since I am the press spokesman and webmaster of this group, I assembled some documents, including an eyewitness report from Arthur Thiry from Sweden, a HuK press release, and several pictures.

Thanks Doug for this information. It's too bad stories such as this don't make it to our main media outlets. Just maybe, if America saw more and more the results of homophobia, things like this would become a part of our past. Just imagine...
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Blaine: Just imagine this. There is a Heaven but it will someday be on Earth and all peoples of all ages, past, present and future will live for eternity, together, in the wonderful peace and caring this song describes.
And all the peoples of those outside of Christianity, that were supposed to be put in Hell by a loving and compassionate God will be our neighbor and friend.
Just imagine.

It does seem a trifle ironic that Latvian gay pride was defended at a service held at a Church of England church when that institution itself (as activists like Peter Tatchell will vouch for)is homophobic.

I'm wondering if all this homohating in Eastern Europe has some kind of common thread - or organization - behind it. I hope the more progressive members of the EU make it clear to these "citizens" - in no uncertain terms - that if they can't catch up to modern thinking on Human Rights, their countries will not be reaping the benefits of modern thinking on a United Europe. Let them rot in economic and social isolation, because that seems to be what they really desire.

This is outrageous behavior...it is horrendously sad to see that in this day and age a European nation would allow such assaults against human beings to take place. Of course we have pockets of hate in this country as well, but the police at least seem to feel obligated to do their job. But of course gay establishments are still frequently targeted for shut down (especially during the big Election years!) It seems in this country the police seem to have to show they are doing their job occasionally and gay people are among those targeted! I send heartfelt support to those suffering in Latvia, Moscow and elsewhere!
