THE MORALITY OF OUR TIME
I so loved the cartoon accompanying my article on "The Man Who Would Destroy PBS" in the new L.A. Weekly that I must share it with you:

Gayle,
While it is certainly true that Cochran has, in the past, been a supporter of the NEA and arts funding,he also now has ambitions to be on the Republican ticket in '08, seeing himself as a perfect ticket-balancer to a Northern, midWestern, or Western candidate. Given the inordinate power the Christer right has in the GOP, it would hardly be surprising if he pandered to them and went after public broadcasting, one of their favorite targets, particularly in their anti-homosexual crusading (which Cochran, in his public expressions and votes, fully supports.) Morever, this entire anti-PBS campaign is being orchestrated by Karl Rove and the White Houe, and one imagines there is considerable pressure behind the scenes on Cochran from that quarter. Finally, I talked to a couple of my Hill sources on the Senate side, and the smart money is betting on a backroom Lewis-Cochran deal to the detriment of PBS. I hope this answers your question.

Where did you get your information about Thad Cochran? From all the other reports I've read on this, I understood him to have a strong history of supporting CBP. Is that just spin?
